The Volkswagen e-up has a heated windscreen. Is that because VW figured out it takes less energy to defrost that way than to heat air and blow it against the windscreen?

So instead of warm air, they have heated seats and a heated windscreen? Or is their also hot air available too?

It does look like there are airflow vents in the dashboard, but maybe that is only for cold air? Can someone please let me know?

klaus, see my post here - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9

EVs are terrible in winter on range. All sorts of reasons why the range gets eaten away. You want to use the barest minimum of cab heating to avoid wasting the battery (= range), so it's very wise of VW to realise that heated seats and windows will allow users to set the cab heaters to the barest minimum. It's very clever of them and shows they've done their research on the problems that existing EV users complain about. It is definitely a big plus for VW to put this option in.

Thanks for the explanation! So it isn't that you can't heat the cabin, they have just given you the option in the E-up! not to heat the cabin (or heat it very ltitle) but still keep the windshield clear of moisture.

Exactly. Ideally all you really need is a little pool of warm air around your feet and you'll stay warm, so you can set a low fan speed of warm air to your feet, but that might not be enough to keep the windows from steaming up unless you vent some of that warm air onto the window (which is then 'wasted' as it is cooled down by that cold screen).

You want as little fan speed as possible, because whatever you put 'in' will get squeezed out somewhere else! You don't want that warm air going to waste! So you want the smallest amount of hot air, not a large amount of warm air.

If you read through the mynissanleaf forum, many of those guys seem mad to me, they seem to be happy to sit in their cars with no heating and use blankets! They complain of the windows steaming up and so open the windows instead! I can't see the logic of buying a car with a heater and then not using it in winter, the only question with an EV is how to use it most efficiently, and the seat and window heaters help you to do that.
